In case you wish to get a French manicure you might need tapes, but those aren’t mandatory. You can draw the smile-lines by hand or use simple tape that is cut to follow the shape of your nails.
First you must remove the polish from your nails. It is useful to apply hand cream or to keep your hands in warm water to soften the nails and the cuticles. Then you should cut the nails, file them to create the shape you wish to have and push the cuticles. It is advisable to push them instead of cutting, because this way you can avoid infections.
When you’re done with this step, you should apply a base coat to prevent the polish from damaging your nails. The base coat also helps the polish to be better fixed. Then comes the next layer is the color you wish to have. After that layer has dries if you don’t want to paint anything else you can apply the top coat to make the polish more resistant.
In case of a French manicure after the base coat you have to stick the tapes and paint the tips. After a couple of minutes remove the tapes and let the polish dry. After it has dried you can apply the next layer that usually is pink, nude or clear. If you wish to have a not-so-traditional French Manicure then after you apply the color of the base, stick the tapes and paint the tips.
